City of Gardens: The Other Side of the Fence is a new book that I am working on. Victoria, B.C. Canada is in the mist of changing how they deal with mental illness, addiction and homelessness. There is three sites in Victoria that will be profoundly beneficial to the homeless population which will include a new emergency homeless shelter on Ellice Street. If more emphasis was put towards permanent housing, the demands for a new shelter would not be as prominent. We could easily keep the present shelter, after some renovations and expand on a permanent solution. There will be some supported housing units added to Swift House in conjunction to what they already have. The housing complex on Humboldt Street will house and support 50+ homeless people. Unfortunately, this will be a ways down the road before occupancy becomes a reality at these sites. We had a fundraiser for the fight against the Cycle of Homelessness through a major coffee house chain which raised a few thousand dollars, but one kind soul dropped off a $10,000 cheuqe in exchange for a cup of coffee, thus raising the total over $13,000 towards homelessness. Victoria is warming up to the idea that we must invest into our future and to those of are vulnerable. That was a very successful and humbling display of caring from the community. It is this show of hearts that makes this city so great. |

Ideas? Do you have an idea for a blog or a comment? We are changing our format to accommodate the people overlooked and forgotten who live with mental illness and/or addiction. Society has turned a blind eye to these chronic conditions. We want to inform, educate and inspire those directly or indirectly effected. |

Updated Daily
We promote education and awareness about mental illness and/or addiction. Even today, these conditions are not taken seriously by government, policy makers and institutions. Mental illness and/or addiction is growing every year. More people are ending up on the street than at any other time in our history. It is obvious that the present system to help these people is failing. The root of the problem is overshadowed by the aftermath of these conditions. This blog will be devoted to bring about awareness about mental illness and/or addiction. We invite you to join us.
